  • THEA - Computer Administered Test (THEA CAT) - F.A.Q.

    1. When is the THEA CAT given?

    It is typically offered once a week or more often, as needed. For information on the test dates and times, please call National Evaluation Systems, Inc. (NES), at (512) 927-5100. This line is available from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. central time, Monday, through Friday, excluding holidays.

    2. How do I register for the THEA CAT?

    Registration for the THEA CAT is by telephone only.

    3. If I fail the test or a section in the THEA CAT, can I retake it?

    Once you take the THEA CAT, you must wait at least 30 days before taking the THEA Test on computer again. You may, however, register for a regularly scheduled paper-and-pencil THEA Test administration.

    4. Is there a limit to the number of times I can take the THEA CAT?

    There is no limit to the number of times you may take any or all sections of the THEA Test in order to pass; however, once you take the THEA CAT, you must wait at least 30 days before taking the THEA Test on computer again.

    7. How do change my THEA CAT registration?

    If you need to change the test date, test center, or reporting time for which you originally registered, YOU should call National Evaluation Systems, Inc. (NES), between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. central time, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
    The deadline to make changes is two days prior to your test date.

    10. Will I receive a refund if I withdraw from the THEA CAT?

    You will receive a partial refund of your fee, in the amount of $55, if your request is received no later than seven days before the date of the test from which you are withdrawing. No refunds will be issued for Withdrawal Request Forms received after this withdrawal deadline.

    11. When will I receive the refund of my withdrawal?

    Approximately four weeks after the test administration date, any refund will be credited to your credit card account or mailed to you if you paid with a Western Union Quick Collect money transfer.

    5. What are the fees for the Test?

    Fee for regular registration for any or all sections of the THEA CAT: $85

    Optional fees for the THEA CAT:
    • Change of registration (test date, test center, reporting time) seven days or more before the test date: no charge
    • Change of registration (test date, test center, reporting time) between six and two days before the test date: $15
    • Charge by NES for processing revoked authorization for credit card payment: $20

    6. What are the fees for extra score reports?

    Extra score reports
    • Additional institution score report.

    • Standard delivery - 1 week: $12 per institution
      Emergency delivery - 2 business days: $25 per institution
    • Examinee score report reprint.

    • Standard delivery - 1 week: $12 per report
      Emergency delivery - 2 business days: $25 per report

    8. Is there a fee for changing my test date, test center, or reporting time?

    There is no fee for changes make seven days or more before the test.
    A $15 processing fee is charged for all registration changes made between six and two days before the test date; this is in addition to the $85 registration fee.

    9. What do I do if I want to withdraw from the THEA CAT test?

    If you wish to withdraw your registration for the THEA CAT, fill out the Withdrawal Request Form. Send your Withdrawal Request Form to:

    12. If I am absent from the THEA CAT will I get a refund?

    If you are absent from a test administration and your Withdrawal Request Form was not received seven days prior to your test date, you will not be entitled to any refund unless you have previously passed the Writing Section. If you have previously passed the Writing Section of the THEA Test and are absent from the subsequent test administration, you will automatically receive a refund of $15 about four weeks after the subsequent test administration.
