CLEP |
|
CLEP is a national program of credit by examination that allows you to obtain recognition for college-level achievement.
CLEP examinations cover material taught in courses that most students take as requirements in the first two years of college. Many examinations are designed to correspond to one-semester courses; some, however, correspond to full-year or two courses. |

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE TESTS
CLEP exams are administered on computer. Each test is 90 minutes long and, except for English Composition with Essay, is made up primarily of multiple-choice questions; however, some exams do have questions that require test takers to type in an answer. Additional time is provided for pretest questions and tutorials. For the English Composition with Essay, test taker is required to type a 45-minute essay in addition to completing a 45-minute multiple-choice section, and is also required to pay an additional $15.00 fee payable to the University of Houston.
Score reports are available immediately - they are printed directly at the end of each testing session. If you have taken English Composition with Essay, you will receive one combined score after the essay has been scored, usually one to three weeks after your test date.
To request additional transcripts (a report of your CLEP scores sent to one or more recipients), please call the CLEP Transcript Request Service at 800.257.9558. There is a $20.00 fee for each transcript you request. Please include your name (at testing time), date of birth, social security number, exam title, test date, location you tested, and where you want the transcript to be sent.

Retesting:
The CLEP program has a longstanding policy that exams may not be retaken within a six-month period. If a candidate retakes the examination during this period, the administration is considered invalid, the score is cancelled, and exam fees are forfeited. This waiting period provides students with the opportunity to spend additional time preparing for the exam or the option of taking a classroom course.
CLEP may waive this policy for exams retaken after a three-month period upon special written request from an institution. An academic dean, dean of students or registrar must submit the letter; requests from academic advisers, faculty members or test center administrators will not be accepted. The letter must be on the institution’s letterhead and should include the candidate’s name and Social Security number, date of birth, the examination title, and the date the examination was taken. If the letter is initially submitted by fax, institutions must follow up with the original letter sent via mail immediately. The candidate must also submit a retesting appeal (reason for requesting a retest) in writing which should be forwarded along with the institution’s letter.
Military service members whose exams are funded by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) may not repeat an examination of the same title within a 180-day period under any circumstance.
